BASF's advanced joint technology makes Indonesia's longest bridge safer, stronger

  • WABO® Modular Expansion Joint System absorbs the impact of heavy traffic and provides a smooth riding surface
  • Sets up fabrication centers allowing customization for individual project requirements

Jakarta, Indonesia – June 17, 2009 – BASF’s innovative bridge joint technology has been applied in the construction of Indonesia’s longest bridge to improve both its safety and strength.

BASF’s WABO® Modular Expansion Joint Control Systems has been used in the longest bridge in Indonesia, the Surabaya – Madura (Suramadu) Bridge, which links the provincial capital Surabaya in the northeast of the island of Java and the town of Bangkalan on the neighboring island of Madura.

The 5.4km Suramadu Bridge, opened on June 10, 2009, is the first land-link between the two islands. The bridge plays a crucial role for the economic development of the people in East Java, particularly for those living on Madura Island.

“BASF’s contribution emphasizes the company’s commitment to Indonesia and our capability in providing innovative solutions that facilitate a safer and stronger bridge,” said Mark Volmer, Group Vice President responsible for BASF’s Construction Chemicals Business in Asia Pacific.

"BASF is committed to developing Indonesia's infrastructure and industry. We are also involved in Cakung Tanjung Priok toll road, Suralaya Power Plant, and Halim Perdana Kusuma VVIP hanggar projects. Apart from these projects, our commitment also reaches out to society and agricultural productivity," said Teguh Tarius, Local Operating Manager, Construction Chemicals, BASF Indonesia.

Volmer added, "BASF is proud to participate in this project. Together with our partner, we are able to help put minds at ease about the safe exchange of goods and services between the two areas and open up new economic opportunities."

BASF’s cutting-edge bridge joint technology in the WABO Modular Expansion Joint System has been custom-designed to meet the large movement requirements of the bridge. For this project, BASF supplied 120 meters of WABO SB 320 and 60 meters of WABO SB 1120 Expansion Joint Systems for the main carriageway and the footpath area, and WabocreteII as expansion joint header material for 2000 meters long small expansion joints.  The expansion joint design is based on latest AASHTO Design Guidelines with a special protective coating for marine environments.

With its versatility, WABO® Modular Joint systems provide smooth riding surfaces, while absorbing the impact of heavy traffic as each modular joint is engineered and manufactured to meet a variety of conditions and requirements. In addition, the system reliably seals the joint gap, keeping runoff water from passing through to the substructure and making it watertight. They are also engineered to last longer than the bridge decks they protect.

WABO® has developed the most advanced and flexible fabrication center to customize each WABO® Modular expansion joint to meet individual project requirements. The fabrication center in Thailand is ISO certified for quality control in fabrication and assembly. In Indonesia, WABO® Modular Joint is distributed by PT Magda Tama Multi Usaha.
